Stripe fees explained (US online)

Stripe’s published US rate for standard online card charges is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful payment. This guide walks through the forward math CardFeeCalc uses on /stripe—not custom pricing, in-person rates, or international cards.

How the fee is calculated

Processing fee = round(charge × 2.9% + $0.30)

Net payout = charge − processing fee

Effective fee % = fee ÷ charge (rises on small charges because of the fixed $0.30)

Worked examples (live calculator math)

$100.00 charge — fee $3.20, net $96.80, effective 3.20%

$25.00 charge — fee $1.03, net $23.97, effective 4.12%

$10.00 charge — fee $0.59, net $9.41, effective 5.90% (fixed fee dominates)

When the $0.30 fixed fee dominates

On a $10.00 charge, $0.59 of the 5.90% effective fee is the flat $0.30. On $100.00, the percent share grows and effective fee drops toward 2.9% plus a small fixed bump. That is why micropayments and low-ticket items feel “more expensive” on Stripe even though the headline rate is unchanged.

FAQ

Are my numbers sent to a server?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing typed is uploaded or stored.
What is Stripe’s US online card fee on CardFeeCalc?
2.9% + $0.30 per successful online card charge on the standard US plan—the same rate used on the Stripe fee calculator and fee comparison page.
When does the $0.30 fixed fee matter most?
On small charges the fixed $0.30 is a large share of the sale, so effective fee percent is higher until the charge amount grows.
How do I gross up a Stripe charge to hit a net target?
Use the Stripe reverse calculator or the what-to-charge-after-fees guide: charge = (net + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 2.9%), rounded up to the cent.
